Israeli President Isaac Herzog is scheduled to officially designate a candidate
to form government on Sunday, following consultations with newly elected parliamentary
factions.

## Process to Select a Candidate to Form Government

Under Israeli law, the presidency plays a central constitutional role after general
elections. The president holds formal discussions with representatives of all parties
elected to the Knesset to hear their recommendations before making an official selection.

President Herzog’s pending decision marks a crucial step in establishing the country’s
next administration. The lawmaker selected will be granted a formal mandate to negotiate
with rival parties and assemble a viable majority coalition.

## The Mandate and Coalition Building

Securing a governing majority in Israel’s 120-seat Knesset requires at least 61
seats. Because no single political party has ever won an outright parliamentary
majority in Israel’s history, building a coalition remains mandatory for any prospective
prime minister.

Once named on Sunday, the designated candidate typically receives a preliminary
28-day window to negotiate ministerial appointments, policy guidelines, and coalition
agreements with prospective partners. If necessary, the law allows the president
to grant a limited extension to finalize negotiations.

## Next Steps in the Political Process

If the designated leader successfully forms a coalition within the allotted timeframe,
the proposed government must present its agenda and win a vote of confidence in
the Knesset before taking office.

Failure to reach an agreement within the legal deadline would prompt the president
to either task another lawmaker with forming an administration or refer the mandate
back to parliament. Observers and political factions across the country now await
Sunday’s official announcement from the presidential residence.
