# North Korea Tells UN Seoul Fabricated Landmine Blast Along DMZ

**UNITED NATIONS** — North Korea has formally rejected accusations that it planted
antipersonnel mines inside the Demilitarized Zone, asserting that Seoul fabricated
landmine blast claims to ignite cross-border friction, according to an official
letter submitted to the United Nations Security Council.

The denial follows an explosion that severely injured two South Korean soldiers
during a routine security patrol on the southern side of the inter-Korean border.
South Korean and United States military investigators concluded that North Korean
troops infiltrated the border zone and deliberately buried wooden-box mines along
a known patrol path.

## Pyongyang Insists Seoul Fabricated Landmine Blast to Fuel Tensions

In the letter addressed to the Security Council presidency, North Korea’s permanent
mission to the UN dismissed the findings as groundless political theater. Pyongyang
argued that the accusations serve as a pretext for joint military exercises between
South Korea and the United States.

North Korean diplomats maintained that their military forces had no strategic or
tactical reason to deploy explosives in the sector. The letter accused South Korean
authorities of orchestrating a provocation to stoke anti-Pyongyang sentiment both
domestically and internationally.

“If our army needed to achieve a military objective, we would have used formidable
firepower rather than three wooden-box landmines,” North Korea’s military leadership
previously stated in state media reports echoing the UN correspondence.

## South Korea and UN Command Present Blast Evidence

South Korea’s Ministry of National Defense strongly dismissed Pyongyang’s claims
of fabrication. Defense officials reiterated that physical evidence recovered from
the crater site definitively links the explosives to North Korean weaponry.

Investigators recovered fragments of pine wood, specialized spring detonators, and
remnants of TNT consistent with North Korean PMD-57 antipersonnel mines. Soil analysis
and explosive residue tests also confirmed that the devices were newly placed and
did not wash down from heavy rainfall or flooding.

The multinational United Nations Command Military Armistice Commission (UNCMAC)
conducted an independent investigation into the incident. The commission concluded
that the Korean People’s Army violated the 1953 Armistice Agreement by placing lethal
devices south of the Military Demarcation Line.

## Escalating Tensions Along the Demilitarized Zone

The border incident has driven inter-Korean relations to a dangerous standoff. In
response to the maiming of its soldiers, South Korea resumed frontline propaganda
loudspeaker broadcasts for the first time in over a decade.

Pyongyang reacted sharply to the psychological warfare broadcasts, putting frontline
combat units on high alert and threatening targeted strikes against the sound systems.
Both militaries have increased artillery readiness and surveillance operations along
the 250-kilometer frontier.

Regional powers, including Washington and Beijing, have called for restraint to
prevent miscalculations from triggering a wider military exchange across the heavily
fortified border.

## What Happens Next

Diplomatic efforts are underway to contain the crisis before military maneuvers
escalate further. While North Korea seeks to clear itself of responsibility at the
United Nations, member states have urged Pyongyang to halt provocative behavior
along the demarcation line.

As military tensions linger across the Demilitarized Zone, Pyongyang’s insistence
that Seoul fabricated landmine blast evidence highlights the deep distrust dividing
the Korean Peninsula and the volatile nature of cross-border security.
