# Why Young Israelis Are More Conservative Than Their Parents

In many Western democracies, younger generations lean progressively leftward on
social and economic issues. In Israel, however, the political trajectory points
in the exact opposite direction. Over the past two decades, polling data and election
results consistently show that **young Israelis are more conservative** than their
parents and grandparents, forming the backbone of the country’s nationalist and
right-wing political bloc.

Surveys conducted by the Israel Democracy Institute (IDI) and the Pew Research Center
indicate that more than 70% of Jewish Israelis aged 18 to 24 identify as politically
right-wing. In contrast, older demographics exhibit a broader ideological spread,
with significantly higher proportions identifying as centrist or left-wing. This
generational divergence is not an anomaly; it is a profound structural shift driven
by lived security experiences, demographic evolution, and historical disillusionment.

## Growing Up in the Shadow of Conflict and Security Crises

The starkest divide between younger Israelis and their parents lies in their formative
political memories. Older Israelis lived through the 1979 peace treaty with Egypt,
the 1994 treaty with Jordan, and the optimism surrounding the 1993 Oslo Accords.
They remember an era when a negotiated two-state resolution appeared within reach.

By contrast, Israelis in their teens, twenties, and early thirties have known only
conflict, instability, and political stagnation. Their earliest memories often include
the violence of the Second Intifada, recurring military operations against Hamas
in Gaza, and routine rocket sirens. For this cohort, territorial withdrawal is rarely
associated with peace. Instead, the 2005 disengagement from Gaza is widely viewed
through the lens of subsequent rocket fire and armed confrontation, cementing a
skeptical outlook toward concessions.

The catastrophic Hamas attacks of October 7, 2023, and the ensuing regional war
further reinforced these attitudes. For younger citizens, national security is not
an abstract debate; it is an urgent, existential priority that aligns naturally
with conservative and hawkish defense policies.

## Demographic Shifts Reshaping the Electorate

Demography plays a decisive role in explaining why young Israelis are more conservative
than earlier generations. The composition of the Jewish Israeli youth population
has fundamentally changed over the past thirty years.

Traditional, religious-Zionist, and Haredi (Ultra-Orthodox) communities have significantly
higher birth rates than secular, liberal populations. According to Israel’s Central
Bureau of Statistics, religious and ultra-Orthodox families average between four
and six children, compared to roughly two children per family in secular households.
As these children reach voting age, they alter the national political baseline.

Historically, religious and traditional communities lean overwhelmingly rightward
on matters of national identity, judicial policy, and security. As their share of
the youth demographic expands, conservative principles naturally dominate the political
mainstream.

## The Collapse of the Israeli Peace Camp

Another factor driving the shift is the near-total collapse of the traditional Israeli
political left. Parties like Labor and Meretz, which dominated the state’s early
decades and led the peace process in the 1990s, have seen their parliamentary representation
shrink to historic lows.

Younger voters have grown up in a media and political environment where left-leaning
diplomacy was largely framed as naive or obsolete. Conservative leaders, most notably
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, spent years cultivating narratives that prioritize
military deterrence and bilateral agreements from positions of strength—such as
the Abraham Accords—over territorial compromises with the Palestinians. For millions
of first-time voters, right-wing governance is the only political reality they have
ever known.

## Mandatory Military Service and National Identity

Mandatory conscription in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) also shapes the worldview
of young citizens at an impressionable age. Serving on front lines, operating checkpoints,
and managing complex security threats directly exposes young soldiers to regional
hostilities.

While military service has long been a feature of Israeli life, today’s recruits
operate in an era characterized by non-state actors, urban warfare, and immediate
digital information. This experience often deepens collective solidarity, sharpens
threat perceptions, and fosters distrust toward international institutions, leading
to stronger identification with nationalist political movements.

## What Happens Next for Israel’s Political Landscape?

The rightward tilt of Israel’s youth suggests that the country’s conservative trajectory
is set to endure for generations to come. Future coalition governments will likely
face intense domestic pressure to maintain uncompromising security postures, expand
religious and national education, and resist international calls for territorial
partition.

As young Israelis continue to assume leadership roles across politics, academia,
and the military, their conservative consensus will define not only Israel’s domestic
policies, but also its strategic relationship with international allies and regional
neighbors.
